Artist: Richard Blossom Farley (American, 1875-1954)
“Mr. Farley was born at Poultney, Vermont, October 24, 1875, trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia when Cecelia Beaux and Wm. H. Chase were instructors in portraiture. He then went to Paris and studied under [James McNeill] Whistler in 1898-1899.” (1)
“Farley...attended the New Jersey State Model School in Trenton, and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia, where he sporadically exhibited from 1902 until 1931.” (2)
“Farley also exhibited at the Philadelphia Art Club in 1912 and 1913, the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., in 1914, St. Botolph’s Club in Boston, and at the Panama-Pacific Exposition in San Francisco in 1915. He was a member of the Philadelphia Sketch Club, the Art Alliance in Philadelphia, and the American Federation of Arts and the Salmagundi Club in New York.” (3)
“He married Abigail Rosenthal in 1914 at Philadelphia.(She was the daughter and sister of other renowned artists). They lived in Newtown, Bucks County in 1920. (The federal census enumerator recorded his occupation as a truck farmer!) In 1954 he lived in rural Eddington, Bucks County, Pa. He died as a result of an accidental fall on the floor and resulting fractured hip.” (4)
