“During April [1994] the Frumkin/Adams Gallery will show a group on new paintings by Philip Wofford. These new works are the most heavily encrusted to date by an artist already noted for the density of his paint application, as well as for intensity of color complexity of composition.” (4)
“In the new works the paint is built up to where it seems almost modeled rather than applied with brushstrokes. The use of found material which are embedded in the paint surface reaches a point not seen previously in the work. In the pas [sic] Wofford has used string, rope, and pieces of cloth in building up surface textures, and to these have now been added stones, bones, and wood, albeit almost unrecognizable in the way they are integrated into the painting surface. Despite their references to other cultures, however, the principal motifs of the paintings continue to be taken from nature.”(4)
“Philip Wofford's work has been offered at auction multiple times.” (1)
“Exhibited: San Francisco Mus. Ann., 1958; WMAA, 1969 , 1972-73; CGA; Andre Emmerich Gallery, NYC, 1970s.” (2)
