Artist: Marques Reitzel (American, 1896-1963)
“Painter, illustrator, etcher. Born in Fulton, IN on March 13, 1896. After serving in WWI, Reitzel studied at the AIC and then earned a Ph.D [sic] degree at Ohio State University. He moved to California in 1938 to establish the art department at San Jose State College and was its director until retirement in 1956” (1).
The 1940 U.S. Census mentions Marques Reitzel was living with the Dexter family while living in Santa Clara, California; the head of household was Benning Dexter, his wife Betty Dexter and their daughter Drucilla Dexter (2).
“His final years were spent on a ranch near Pescadero, CA where he conducted a summer art school. Reitzel died at San Mateo Hospital on Dec. 26, 1963” (1).
