  • Artist: Lawrence Carmichael Earle (American, 1845-1921)

“Mr. Earle was born in New York City Nov. 11, 1845, and came to Grand Rapids with his father when he was 12 years of age.” (1)
“The boy at the age of twelve, began studying under the eye of Dutch-born Marinus Harting.” (2)
“He returned to New York in 1866, where for several years he studied and painted.” (1)
“Besides painting, Lawrence had another interest. In 1867 Lawrence was a founding member and officer of The Kent Base Ball Club.” (2)
“[M]oving from there to Chicago, where he opened a studio and painted until the disastrous fire of 1871. From there he went to Europe and, after several years of study and work in Munich, Florence, Paris and other European cities, returned to America and made his home at Montclair, N. J.” (1)
“Working in both oil and watercolor, he painted landscapes, genre, farm scenes, still life, murals, fish, butterflies, coastal scenes and portraits.” (3)
“In 1878, Lawrence Earle became a member of the Chicago Literary Club. The Club is a voluntary association of men and women interested in writing original essays on topics of their own choosing and in listening to other members present their essays. Meetings were held weekly from October through May; one essay is delivered each evening. Most members were not professional writers, but all were expected to express themselves competently in English, and to present their essays in typewritten or printed form to the Secretary for inclusion in the Club archives.” (2)
“In 1885 he was married to Miss Helen Harmon. In 1909, after the death of his wife, Mr. Earle returned to Grand Rapids to live and has made this city his residence since.” (1)
“Earle exhibited with the National Academy of Design, the Art Institute of Chicago, the 1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago and, from 1887 to 1900, the Boston Art Club. He decorated the Chicago National Bank with murals and his work is represented in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago; the National Academy of Design; Stanford University in Stanford, CA; the Dallas Museum of Art; the State Museum of Michigan in Lansing; the Hunter Museum of American Art in Chattanooga, TN.” (3)
“Mr. Earle fell unconscious to steps leading to the home of Frank Forsyth, 242 Jefferson ave. SE., and died unseen by passersby. At the Forsyth home, a dozen guests had assembled for a tea given in honor of the aged artist.” (1)
“He died on November 20, 1921, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, at the age of 76, and was buried there.” (1)
