  • Artist: Larry Clark (American, b. 1943)

“Larry Clark was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1943. While a teenager Clark developed his photography skills working as an assistant to his mother, a door-to-door baby photographer.” (1)
“He graduated from Central High School in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Attended Layton School of Art in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and studied under Walter Sheffer and Gerard Bakker.” (2)
“He returned to Tulsa after serving from 1964 to 1966 in the U.S. Army in Vietnam, and he began to freelance there and in New York City.” (3)
“Clark's first book, ‘Tulsa,’ (1971) was a collection of photographs that he took of his friends over a nine-year period.” (2)
“Although primarily concerned with themes of drugs, sex and violence, Tulsa was lauded for its graphic yet sensitive representation of young Americans, inaugurating a raw, confessional photographic style that candidly engaged a lived experience and which would exert a profound influence over photographers and filmmakers including Nan Goldin, Ryan McGinley, Gus Van Sant and Martin Scorsese.” (4)
“In the 1990s Clark extended his work to filmmaking by directing Kids (1995), a fictionalized account of teenagers involved in a skateboarding and nightclub culture in New York City, which was critically acclaimed, though the film’s powerful and candid portrayal of teenage sexuality and drug abuse made it controversial. Clark went on to make other films, including Another Day in Paradise (1998), Bully (2001), Wassup Rockers (2005), and The Smell of Us (2014). Marfa Girl (2012).” (3)
“Clark has been the recipient of the National Endowment for the Arts' Photographers' Fellowship in 1973 and the Creative Arts Public Service Photographers' Grant in 1980. His work is included in important museum and private collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, NY; The Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY; The Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY; the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco, CA; The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, CA; The Houston Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, TX; Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, CA; and the Frankfurt Museum für Moderne Kunst, Frankfurt, Germany. In 2010, a retrospective of Clark's work, Kiss the past hello, was held at the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris. He lives and works in New York.” (1)
“Clark currently lives and works between Los Angeles, CA and New York, NY.” (5)
