  • Artist: Regina Kay

Regina Kay created Sunday Drive and Dragonfly Splendor simply because she decided to play instead of force a narrative of some deep meaning and great significance. In this way the process is indicative of this show. The work to produce pieces for Spring Equinox began months ago, yet more than five drafts are in several states of completion because after a while they did not feel like Spring, but rather like intensity. Though we consider finished products “work,” Spring work should be about and feel like light and play, whimsy and delight.

So, Regina Kay abandoned the several workings and decided to work with what she loves best: paper, pencils, pens, and color. These pieces play with the translation of several beautiful images encountered daily on St. Croix and “collages” them in a mindful recreated space. Dragonfly Splendor plays with the nature notebook genre of the 1800s and Crucianizes it. The dragonfly is Regina Kay’s spirit insect. When she crosses paths with one, she is reminded of her own journey and transformation into a joyful thing of nature. Sunday Drive mashes together an eclectic array of houses, hangout spots, and trees that pop up and fascinate on the most ordinary drive. Both pieces exist under the best sun in the world–the Caribbean sun!

Regina Kay is an English teacher, writer, and proud whimsical spirit. She was born, raised, and educated in local public and parochial schools. Among her favorite artists are Van Gogh, Winslow Homer, William H. Johnson, and Dove.
