There are no words

  • Paper, thread, bamboo
  • CLARE SMITH

There are no words is an installation piece exploring language loss and the inadequacy of language. It was created using a labour intensive process of cutting out, by hand, the space on ready-made Chinese writing practice paper where the characters would be written to create empty spaces of possibility and transform the grids into lace-like structures which reference the body, neural structures and gaps in memory.

  • Subject Matter: writing, memory, loss
