Wandering through Arches National Park in the winter of 2020, I found myself on Devil’s Garden Trail towards the end of our day hiking. Every direction you look in this national park has breathtaking views, but I felt most drawn to the quiet moments of layered rock, the corridors, and the labyrinths of the smaller trails like the Navajo Arch Trail, which is the reference for this piece. The smooth lines and graceful layers of the Entrada Sandstone bring to mind the subtle curves and layers of arms wrapping around oneself. I often experience this posture of drawing inward when I feel vulnerable; here, I wanted to represent this position not as a withdrawal but as a fortifying place of rest.
