Christopher Pease (b. 1969) x
Christopher Pease is a leading Minang/Wardandi/Bibbulmun artist whose painting practice examines library records, archive documents and colonial imagery, as the foundation for work which compares and contrasts historical documentation with contemporary Noongar narratives. His visual language is at once deeply embedded within the western history of figurative oil painting and traditional Indigenous storytelling. Western notions of home and land ownership and the consequent loss of Aboriginal culture are referenced throughout Pease’s vocabulary of visual metaphor. Christopher Pease is a highly collectable Australian artist who has received national and international recognition for his work. He is currently represented by Gallerysmith, Melbourne, has had multiple solo shows and participated numerous high-profile group exhibitions across Australia. In 2020, Pease was awarded the prominent ‘Elevate’ commission at the Art Gallery of Western Australia. Pease’s work is held in National and International collections including National Gallery of Australia; National Museum of Australia; National Gallery of Victoria; Art Gallery of Western Australia; Queensland Art Gallery; Parliament House Collection, Canberra; Wesfarmers Collection; Edith Cowan University, Perth; Holmes a Court Collection; Kerry Stokes Collection; John Curtin University, Perth; Murdoch University, Perth; Artbank and the Museum of Contemporary Aboriginal Art, Utrect, Netherlands. Most recently Pease’s 34m long rooftop installation, Targets, was unveiled at the Art Gallery of Western Australia
