Suitcases

For migrants, suitcases are potent transcultural symbols both of journey past and of unstable potential for further movement. They have journeyed carrying cherished objects from homelands to foreign places.
Found as discarded objects, the evidence of their journeys is revealed in the suitcases worn and dilapidated surfaces with the markers of foreign countries or destinations ardently hand-painted on them.
By photographing them isolated on a black background, I am commemorating their previous existence before their inevitable departure.
Similar to early post-mortem photography, these images function as the mourning and memorialisation process and remind us of our own mortality.
