Metal Trees were originally commissioned as part of the

Australia-wide ‘National Metal Industry’ sculpture project in 1995. An artist in each state was chosen to work with an industry partner to create a new public artwork.

In Western Australia, Kevin Draper was chosen to work with Transfield at their workshops at the Garden Island Naval Base. The artwork was initially installed at the front entrance of Joondalup Arena. When the sporting complex undertook major development in 1999, Joondalup Arena gifted the artwork to the City and the work was relocated to Central Park, Joondalup in 2001.
