  • Artist: Trevor Richards

Trevor Richards lives and works in Fremantle, Western Australia. His practice encompasses painting, sculpture, video, photography and installation. In the past two decades he has travelled extensively in Europe, completing residencies, and exhibiting in Switzerland, Poland, France and Germany. In recent exhibitions he has explored colour, pattern, and its relationship to architectural space.

His practice includes both hard-edge abstract paintings and three-dimensional wall mounted works that explore bold colour, geometric shape and pattern. He draws on a wide range of historic and contemporary sources, including Islamic and mosaic tile patterning, architectural modelling and tessellations. He combines all within a reductive aesthetic, which reflects an interest in the play of built structures in everyday life.

In the past ten years, Richards has adapted his studio practice into public and gallery spaces, incorporating floors, walls, windows, and roads as surfaces on which to apply pattern and colour. He has made architectural interventions using materials such as road paint, signwriting film, polypropylene carpet and incorporates epoxy resin and house paint into his studio-based works. He has deliberately used a restricted set of colours over the past twenty years, acting as a type of signature which unites a range of different media and formats for making artworks. This approach has allowed him to free up his practice, unconstrained by stylistic concerns.
