Artist: Teelah George
Teelah George is a visual artist working in Narrm (Melbourne). Her work employs archives and art collections as a departure point for thinking about and making work, unpacking historical understandings of material relationships and the stories that they tell. She works with both found and produced materials including paint, cardboard, Blu Tac, vinyl and most recently embroidery and bronze. Notions of time and labour inherent within the things made and kept are translated through material investigations and abstractions, drawing on the parallel ambiguities between historical record and visual art.
Since graduating from Curtin University in Perth in 2007, George has exhibited widely both nationally and internationally. Most recently she has contributed to Melbourne Now 2023 at The National Gallery of Victoria, Night Shifts at Buxton Contemporary, VIC, and Pliable Planes: Expanded textiles and fibre practices at The University of New South Wales Galleries, NSW which will be traveling throughout Australia in 2023-2024.
Her work is held in both private and public collections across Australia and abroad including: Artbank, MCA Collection, University of New South Wales Collection, University of Western Australia, Art Gallery of Western Australia, Cruthers Collection of Women’s’ Art, City of Joondalup Art Collection, Art Gallery of WA, Macquarie Bank Collection, Monash University Collection, Art Gallery of Australia, and Melbourne University Art Collection. She is represented by Neon Parc, VIC and Laree Payne Gallery, Hamilton NZ.
