Portrait of Marcella Ramey
Born May 8, 1919 in Gloucester
Rank: 1st Lt. Nurse. Service: US Army. Theater: US. Dates of Service: 1941 - 1945
Marcella 'Marcia' Ramey has come full circle in a manner of speaking. She currently lives in an apartment at Central Grammar in Glocuester, the same building from which she graduated high school in 1930. Married to her first husband at 19, she had a daughter Dawn. The marriage ended four years later and as a single mother she knew that she needed to support her daughter. She enrolled in nurses training and worked at Salem Hospital and Lynn General. In 1941 she joined the Army as a nurse and began a four-year stateside tour that would take her to several military hospitals with her child in tow - including California, Massachusetts, Virginia, and Kentucky. Following the war, she attended Seattle University to finish her nursing degree, studying both nursing administration and anesthesia. She married again and had another daughter twenty years after her first. She moved back to Gloucester 40 years ago. "I got my education in the service. I want to emphasize that. I got the whole works. I got my bachelor's degree and master's degree. I had a kid to support. I couldn't have done what I did without going into the service."
