Born and raised in West Gloucester and a graduate of Gloucster High School, R. Munroe Roberts joined the Army in 1943 at the age of 20 and was sent to the Pacific. As a scout in the 25th Infantry, he was shot in the foot during the Battle of Leyte in Luzon and lost a toe. After his recovery, he served as an MP in Japan before his discharge in December of 1945. Back in Gloucester, he bacame a carpenter/builder like his father and grandfather before him. In 1946 he married Pauline Lantz and together they had two children, Leslie (Pope) and Lee Roberts.
