Joe Favazza's father brought his family to Gloucester, from Detroit, in 1923, to go fishing. When the war came in 1941, Joe and his best friend John "Chubby" Nicastro enlisted. They entered the Navy in 1942, though spent the majority of their service posted stateside in Rhode Island. Towards the end of the war, his LST was directed to Saipan in the Pacific. Favazza returned to Gloucester, married his wife Grace in 1947 and went to work as a fisherman. Later in life he worked as a custodian at Fuller School. Grace and Joe have been married for 64 years with seven children, 17 grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren (at the time).
