Portrait of Charles Steiner
Born September 29, 1926 in St. Louis, MO
Rank: Sergeant. Service: US Army. Division/Ship: Army Counter Intelligence. Theater: US. Dates of Service: 1944 - 1946
Charles Steiner was training for the invasion of Japan that never happened as a result of the dropping of bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The 18-year-old St. Louis boy was drafted into the US Army. While his infantry training group was shipped to Europe and the Battle of the Bulge, Steiner was diverted to University of Pennsylvania to study Japanese for a year and then to Camp Holabird in Maryland for counter intelligence training. The end of the war in the Pacific also ended the need for his training and he remained stateside until his discharge in 1946. Steiner made a career in insurance and in 1954 married Nancy Stern; they had two children: Dan Steiner in Houston and Susan Steiner of Gloucester. He has five grandchildren and a great-grandchild on the way (at the time). He and Nancy moved to Gloucester in 2005.
