Portrait of Chandler Davis
Born July 23, 1923 in Gloucester
Rank: Warrant Officer, Jr. Service: US Air Corps. Division/Ship: Air Sea Rescue Service. Theater: Pacific. Dates of Service: 1942 - 1945
Except for his war years, Chandler Davis, the middle child of five, has lived his entire 92-year-life in Annisquam. Having been a member of the ROTC, he joined up in 1943 with the hopes of becoming an aviation cade in the US Air Corps and was immediately placed on a 6-month furlough. When he was finally called up, he found himself assigned to the newly formed Air Sea Rescue Service on PT Crash Boats plucking downed pilots out of the China Sea. He estimates that he and his crew rescued 13 pilots. He returned to Gloucester, worked at and bought Babston-Elwell & Davis Insurance. He had met his first wife, marie Kennedy while on a three-week training mission in Nashville. They had two dates and a year and half of writing letters before they go engaged. They married upon his return in 1945 and remained so until her death in 2000. Together they had three children. Fifteen years ago, Davis married Nancy Ernst of Magnolia and they continue to live in Annisquam.
