Creative Reflection by Cindy Van Kley Image: I’ve found that staring at a blank canvas is never as daunting as it might be when one starts the process by first reading and meditating on what Bahá’ís call the “Creative Word” – sacred writings by which humanity is recreated and civilization advanced every thousand years or so through a Manifestation of God revealing to humanity a fresh outpouring of spiritual instruction suited to the spiritual maturity, geography, and culture of the people. There is power in the Word of God, the power of creation, which scientists can use to find new approaches to problem-solving, and artists can use to find new ways to use color, movement, rhythm, shape, values, etc. to convey emotion, stories, abstract concepts, and stimulate imagination. Reflecting on the Word may help anyone with creativity and problem-solving. Here is the quote from the Creative Word that inspired this painting:

Bahá’u’lláh wrote: “The source of crafts, sciences and arts is the power of reflection. Make ye every effort that out of this ideal mine there may gleam forth such pearls of wisdom and utterance as will promote the well-being and harmony of all the kindreds of the earth.” Tablets of Bahá’u’lláh, p. 72.
