This is the top of a bodega in the Highland Park neighborhood that I drive through on my daily commute to my studio. It's at an intersection where I often get stopped at the red light, so I've seen these shapes in various lights at different times of day and year. These utilitarian objects become beautiful in the afternoon glow or the crisp morning light. For this painting, I increased the vibrancy of the building colors. I also created the sunset sky from my imagination, a practice I began in the lockdown phase of the pandemic, when skies became an escape from the drudgery here on earth. As with many of my skies, I painted it upside down, blending from the orange into the blue.
