A visit to Green Lake was the deciding factor in our move to Seattle in 1993—it reminded me of the lakes in my home town, Minneapolis. I have lived within a stone’s throw of the lake for more than twenty years, and have been painting it for over a decade. Walking its shores on the fog-laden mornings of fall and winter is a centering experience: a hush descends, and I can hear little but the crunch of crushed rock underfoot. The silhouettes of reeds and trees come into sharp relief against the curtain of vapor beyond.
