“Shrines to Nothingness” are a series of small relief sculptures in painted paper pulp that create a quiet space for experiencing pure color. As light falls upon the fluorescent surfaces of the artwork, the colors reflect onto the surroundings, casting an aura that shifts with the light throughout the day. The backsides are also painted, creating a colored shadow between the wall and the artwork.
Small shrines to nothingness stem from a casual practice of building small monuments that honor everything and nothing, a practice that has carried throughout the artists’ lives. The pieces are meant to be hung at a height slightly higher than eye level, so that the colors have ample space to glow without the color source (the surface of the “shelf” element) being visible. One is encouraged to place nothing on the “shelf” and hold the space for wonder, respite, or whatever one wishes to celebrate. "
