In celebration of Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month 2023, we warmly welcome you to this group exhibition titled, “In the Neighborhood: The Art of Westwood” at our hospital’s Frederic C. Hamilton Fine Art Gallery on display from August 29 – November 3, 2023. Submit your feedback for 50 Vitality points here: https://forms.office.com/r/bLW0gB1VBi
The Westwood neighborhood of Denver is located southwest of downtown, bounded by Alameda and Sheridan, with Morrison Road running through its heart. Westwood is known for its vibrant murals, many small businesses, and authentic cuisines shaped by its large Mexican-American population. In 2017, Westwood became an official cultural district.
“Westwood is a neighborhood unlike any other in Denver. The combination of its vibrant community, neighborhood assets, rich cultural landscape including Mexican, Vietnamese, and Native American cultures, serves as the foundation of a celebrated Westwood. The neighborhood is predominately Latino...and should be celebrated as a local and regional destination for authentic cultural experiences." - Denver City Council "Westwood Neighborhood Plan"
In hosting this show highlighting the multi-faceted culture and talents of Colorado’s thriving Hispanic/Latinx art scene in the Westwood neighborhood, it is our greatest hope to give expression to a deeper understanding of Hispanic/Latinx experiences in Denver and beyond. “The population (in Westwood) of Mexican-Americans is the highest in the city. What I’m really trying to do is to really celebrate that. It’s something that is absolutely unique to the neighborhood, and it is something that we believe sets it apart from other parts of the city.” - Paul Lopez (Denver City Clerk and Recorder, former City Council Member)
Hispanic Heritage Month is a celebration of the important and influential presence of Hispanic, Indigenous, and Latinx identifying people in the United States. As we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month and all its richness, we must also create space to educate and share the significance about all our Hispanic communities. This art exhibition is about one neighborhood and one cultural group. We encourage you to seek out more of the diverse Hispanic/Latinx communities in Colorado and beyond.
Special thanks to Unidos, a Children’s Hospital Colorado team member resource group, the Diversity, Health Equity & Inclusion department, Westword magazine for the Paul Lopez interview, and to all participating artists:
