I am interested in the way a legacy affects one’s identity, specifically those passed down in a name. We have no control over the names we are given nor the ideas and traditions attached that come with them. I am the third Charlotte Rose of my family and with that name came stories of the women who came before, carried it throughout their lives, and bestowed upon it a legacy of unshakeable faith, kindness, generosity, and stubbornness. I am often compared to the past matriarchs of my family not only because we share the same name but because we apparently share characteristics, physical and otherwise, in a truly uncanny nature.
This project explores how names and legacies are passed down, how identities and stories become interweaved with kindred souls of the past, and how our identities are shaped by those who come before us.
