Emergence is from the temporary outdoor show "Bending Nature: Four Bamboo Artists in the Garden Portland’s Japanese Garden". This show was created to honor the new wing that was being constructed at the time and comprised of two Japanese artists and two American artists who worked in bamboo. Emergence used Sasa Palmatta Nebulosa bamboo, a small diameter bamboo, to create a spiral that was approximately 9 feet tall. The spiral was surrounded by two wings made from Phyllostachys Nigra Bory bamboo and cloth. The piece addressed growth and chnage from one state to another, which the garden was actively undergoing. I needed to work closely with the garden curator, the gallery curator, and a group of arborists in ordert o create a piece which would hag gracefully and have as little impact on the landscape as possible. Each element swayed gently in the wind. The piece was up for about 4 months.
