Candescere

Tiger bamboo, glass, waxed linen thread “Candescere” is made of hundreds of tiny pieces of riveted and stacked bamboo enclosed in a heat bent and laminated bamboo frame. All the pieces are derived from a bundle of bamboo gathered from a small suburb of Portland. Tiger bamboo, which this piece is made from, is also called Phyllostachys Nigra Bory. Inspirations for “Candescere”, include diatom structures, rose cathedral windows, adobe architecture in both the Southwest and Africa, the sun, and starfish. Each have their own distinct qualities, but I am attracted to the flowing structural shapes of all. The detail in the piece draws the viewer in inviting them to dwell on the repetition and form within the piece. The fused glass within the piece is made of hundreds of tiny handmade lenses all fused together and ornamentally stitched with knotless netted waxed linen thread. Hanging options could include hanging from the ceiling using Arakawa hanging system or a fabricated stand. It could also be backlit as the center is a clear piece of glass.
