My name is John D Gall and I strive to tell stories with my art, whether indirectly as metaphors or directly as narratives. My subjects may be dreamed, imagined, or experienced. I relate to the tradition of etching coming primarily by the artist’s hand drawing upon the plate with an etching needle. The realm of imagination has brought me to a body of work (1995-2014, which I call the Human Equations series. The characters created in these images I simply call Knowledge Seekers. Coming from a math and science background, I am fascinated by the aesthetic beauty of mathematical equations, graphs and symbols. In an almost surreal way, I have begun incorporating the human figure with these symbols, and using these symbols also reveal they are metaphors for “knowledge.” Occasionally you will even discover a playful use of different scales and perspectives within a single image. From about 2014 I began returning more and more to painting working freely from imagination.
