"10,000 Hours" ...

September 2020 Six featured artists

"10,000 Hours" ...

What do the Beatles, Bill Gates, Venus Williams and these Cedars artists all have in common? 10,000 hours of dedication to their work! It is said it takes 10,000 hours of effort to master a craft, and Cedars artists are the very definition of such devotion. Our latest online art show features the spirited and diverse artwork of veteran artists Glenna Cooper, Jean Coury, Jennifer Hall, Tony Hyde, Elliot Jung, and Tim Shepp.

Cedars art departments will now launch a new exhibition every month. This rigorous schedule allows us to feature artwork made over the years, as well as feature the abundant artwork being created at home during shelter in place.

Taking a closer look at the six artist that were selected for "10,000 Hours", you will witness attention to detail, intricate processes, and dedication.

Glenna Cooper is a multi disciplinary artist, who has shown her mastery in beading and wrapping sculptural forms. The life-size show-stopping baseball bat and baseball titled "Grandslam" was beaded in it entirety. The patterns that emerge, from the color selection of the beads is a wonder.

Jean Coury is also multi-faceted, working in two dimensional art, collage, embroidery and textiles. Very unique in her approach, many of her finished works are creative embroidery on top of patterned fabric- very sophisticated and rich with texture.

Jennifer Hall makes subtly colored collages, where she paints with watercolors and then cuts out repeating shapes. Her hands and her vision, are involved in every step of these creations. Towers of triangles or clouds of bubbles make very harmonious compositions.

Tony Hyde is a diligent worker, who is drawn to drawing circles and ovals and outlining shapes. This technique results in forms that look like rocks resonating outwards. Working on top of watercolor and other paintings, he has a large body of vibrant work.

Elliot Jung, a quiet and gentle soul, speaks to us through his drawings. Very specific markings, that are light and wispy, are layered into full large scale drawings. Elliot is in his eighties, and has lived and worked with Cedars most of his life. He is a true veteran artist with a very extraordinary body of work.

Tim Shepp also fits into this exhibition's theme of dedicated work and specific processes. Tim collages small pieces of retro magazines, snippets of words, and pantone color swatches. Very artfully combining these elements, Tim makes collages that can hold the viewer's attention with many curious elements.
