Visiting the London Art Fair at the Business Design Centre for the first time I was as much interested in the building as the Art on display. Naturally I took photographs. The building was originally the Royal Agricultural Hall but was converted into the design Centre in 1986.
The roof is both typical of large structures like train sheds and atypical in the degree of decoration, I love the way the Victorians pay equal attention to decor and structure The elaborate shapes and repetition of elements to create a vast but apparently delicate form.
The picture is painted on watercolour paper. I start off with a detailed pencil drawing. I then draw over the lines with masking fluid before painting it with a watercolour wash which gets covered with clingfilm. Once this is removed the picture is further developed using acrylic inks which are left to dry before the masking is removed to reveal the final picture.
