"Birds Eye View Summer Spruce", 16 X 20" oil on canvas over aluminum.
There are seven spruces off of my deck, and I've painted this one 100 times in my mind. Finally got it down on canvas. A row of seven spruces has begged for years to be painted. The rich mid-summer colors surround the limbs and evergreens, creating a startling formal contrast and a study in design.
The palette is a new one - I've added transparent red oxide, yellow ochre and permanent sap green - which is what the scene screamed out for. A recent heavy rain prompted the greening up of the mountains.
I allowed the strokes to permeate every area, which is rich w ith texture and interest.
My work is best known for its unique ability to show the moment of experience, and then interpret, the extraordinary influence of the natural world. My paintings reflect a deep sensitivity heightened by an urgent sense that that world is under siege.
