King of Power, Queen of Beauty is a compelling exploration of the famed cataracts, drawn from the holdings of the Castellani Art Museum and private collections. Inspired by a 1950s tourism brochure slogan, the exhibition traces the transformation of Niagara Falls from an awe-inspiring natural wonder into an iconic landscape shaped by beauty, power, and the human imagination.

This exhibition examines Niagara Falls as a center of hydroelectric development and technological innovation. It explores large-scale efforts to harness and reshape the Falls, from the generation of hydroelectric power to the alteration of the natural landscape and regulation of its waters. Featured are landmark engineering feats such as the world’s first international suspension bridge, the Great Gorge Route, and the Niagara Power Project.

Highlights include several paintings by local artist Polly King, the subject of a recent CAM retrospective, which capture the beauty of the region’s hydroelectric and manufacturing industries. Recent acquisitions to the CAM collection by Western New York artists Jeffery Barnes and James Neiss are also included to provide a contemporary perspective.

Earlier 19th-century masterworks, including prints by William James Bennett, John Bornet, and Charles Bierstadt, showcase the grandeur of the Falls across all four seasons, as well as surrounding sites such as Goat Island, Terrapin Point, and Table Rock. Original ephemera, including rare advertisements and souvenirs, reflect Niagara Falls’ romantic legacy as the “Honeymoon Capital of the World.”

Ultimately, the exhibition shows how Niagara Falls has inspired artistic expression, fueled industry and tourism, and emerged as a global center of power and innovation—earning its enduring reputation as the “King of Power, Queen of Beauty.”

King of Power, Queen of Beauty is made possible in part thanks to the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Kathy Hochul and the New York State Legislature.
