MessageThis painting took its own sweet time to speak to me. I used a matrix of squares as a jumping-off point. I rarely begin a painting with a defined subject. I had been stuck after an earlier series of textural works. The matrix of cutout squares became something to hold on to. Eventually, on this canvas, a real tug of war took place, kind of like a street rumble. The palette became much brighter and raucous. Layering and line took hold, and I finally reached some resolution. To my surprise, sometime later, what appeared to me in this work were two figures staring back at me. It made me think of jazz musicians. The Argentine Saxophonist, Gato Barbierei came to mind.
