Framed

Perhaps my many years spent in Japan, exposed to Calligraphic design, often in bold black strokes, inspired this painting. This painting came to me over a few sessions. It is on paper, so a certain freedom, yet extra care was involved. At first, it was a group of odd black rectangular-like forms with small geometric shapes and scribbles lurking beneath the surface. Suddenly I took hold of a slatted piece of heavy masonite that had been destined for the garbage in Sr Cayentano's gallery. I painted this cut-out surface and superimposed it over the original black shapes as if it were a wood block print. The composition came alive !!!
