Qian Li is an artist working with video, painting, and interactive installation. She currently working on an animationexploring notions of fear and protection under the shadow of gun violence, and how they are physically and conceptually shaping the mindset, behavior, and experiences of future generations.
During the past seven years, she premiered over sixty new pieces of videos and artwork and participated in five solo exhibitions, wide exhibited nationally and internationally. Her videos have been showing at German, China, Brazil, Serbia, Turkey, Indonesia, Greece, Serbia and many other countries. Qian is two-time recipient of the Individual Excellence Award and Grant from the Ohio Art Council. She has been awarded as artist-in-residence at the headland center of the arts.
Qian also created interactive video for real time multimedia performances, including one live performance at the Cleveland Museum of Art. Due to her unique art style, she has received commissions including a large-scale permanent installation for Cuyahoga Community College’s Technology Learning Center, multimedia installation “Wash Away” at the Cleveland Ingenuity festival. The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth honored her with their Distinguished Art Alumni Award.
Qian have been very active in the Chinese art scene in recent years and became a cultural ambassador that introduces Chinese contemporary art to the US. In 2015, shecurated, fundraised and organized a group exhibition – Tradition Re-interpreted – New Work by Chinese Artistsat The Galleries at CSU. The first of its kind in Northeast Ohio, the exhibition featured very recent works by Chinese contemporary artists who re-interpret the great tradition of Chinese art in their fascinating explorations of formal, stylistic and material aspects of the rapidly-changing economic, social and cultural realities of China. She is currently working on curating and fundraising for next Chinese Contemporary Art exhibition in 2019.
Born in Qingdao, China. Received BFA from the Academy of Arts and Design, Tsinghua University in Beijing. MFA at UMass Dartmouth in Massachusetts. Qian is a professor at Cleveland State University.
carta owns a large collection of artwork by Cleveland area artists, both for adults and children, and purchases about $25,000 of new art annually. We further our mission by donating annual scholarships to Cleveland Institute of Art students and provide educational activities to enhance awareness of area artists.
