Since becoming the Director of the Reinberger Gallery at the Cleveland Institute of Art in 2018, Nikki Woods has been instrumental in collaborating with FRONT International to host exhibitions with a global perspective. Her own works have been seen in several major exhibitions, including the Cleveland-focused CAN Triennial and "The Regional," showcasing contemporary art across the Midwest, as well as at HEDGE Gallery in Cleveland, which represents her.
Woods commented on the evolving art scene, saying, “I think we live in a visual-culture world where images and artwork are becoming more democratized because of Instagram, because of social media. In one way, it’s good to have access to see artwork from all over the world on any platform. But, in another way, everything starts looking the same.”
Born in 1990, Woods produces expressive paintings that blend decorative landscapes, objects, and centerpiece compositions, engaging viewers in a realm of visual and psychological exploration. After graduating from the Cleveland Institute of Art, she has actively participated in numerous juried exhibitions, showcasing her talents at the Reinberger Gallery and the Sandusky Cultural Center. Notably, she received first place in the 65th Annual Student Independent Exhibition in 2011.
Woods’ artistry is characterized by a spontaneous approach to paint application, creating a connection between the artist and the viewer through her dreamlike yet urgent subject matter. Her works on paper reflect the rich legacy of late 19th-century pastel techniques, echoing influences from artists like Redon, Lautrec, and Degas.
Nikki Woods established her presence in the contemporary art world, with her featured in “Oh, Gods of Dust and Rainbows,” part of the FRONT International: Cleveland Triennial for Contemporary Art, affirming Cleveland's rising status in the art landscape.. Her passion for freeing both her mind and that of her audience through art is evident, solidifying her reputation as an artist of increasing renown.
