Artistic Journey:
Growing up, Miller primarily used acrylic paints and originally planned to pursue a career in illustration. However, a transformative painting class that introduced her to oil paints inspired her to explore mixed media. She began with molding paste to evoke textures reminiscent of hair. Throughout her college experience, she experimented with materials reflecting her childhood, including beads, glitter, and insulation foam.
In her junior year, Miller transitioned into sculptural work, using fake hair to create giant faux locks and constructing decorative mirror borders using spray-painted foam, echoing the ornate Baroque frame style. As her work evolved, she incorporated tulle and abstracted materials such as feather boas, metal mesh, and ribbon.
Through her art, Miller explores themes of female empowerment, particularly in representing Black women. She aims to paint them in a beautiful light, addressing the need for more representation in portraiture. Her artworks often reflect her personal experiences, including the intimacy involved when getting her hair done, with a focus on the joy and challenges of beauty rituals.
Miller's journey led her to Afro-Futurism, which she discovered through music and film. While she briefly explored technological themes, her authentic approach emphasizes elements from her own upbringing. With guidance from Black professors and artists, she has further developed her understanding of this movement.
For her BFA exhibition, she created an inviting atmosphere by painting the walls purple, incorporating glitter and gems. Her intention was to establish a space that celebrates Black culture and identity, fostering comfort and belonging for Black individuals in predominantly white environments.
Through her work, Miller emphasizes the importance of creating safe, welcoming spaces where everyone can feel valued and represented.
