Anthony Eterovich
Anthony Eterovich was an accomplished artist whose 70-year career encompassed a wide range of styles from observational art to magical realism. He began his artistic journey at the Cleveland School of Art, where he received a full scholarship in 1938, earning a degree in portraiture. He continued his education at Western Reserve University, obtaining a Bachelor of Science in Education and a Master of Arts in Art Education. Further honing his skills, Eterovich studied at Ohio University and the New York Art Students League from 1948 to 1954.
In addition to his artistic pursuits, Eterovich dedicated over 40 years to teaching in the Cleveland Public School System and served as an adjunct professor at the Cleveland Institute of Art, offering evening and summer classes. Serving as a US Army Sergeant during WWII, he contributed to the war effort by creating topographical maps and painting over 30 portraits of fellow soldiers.
His artwork is celebrated for blending whimsy and reality, characteristic of magical realism. Eterovich utilized the unique qualities of different mediums to create pieces that highlighted everyday moments, often featuring Cleveland landmarks. His works combined stunning photorealism with vibrant colors and surreal elements, adding an enchanting quality to ordinary scenes. Eterovich also explored abstract painting, achieving national recognition for his work "The Merry Bench," which won a first prize at the Butler Institute for American Art.
Eterovich received numerous accolades throughout his career, including having his work showcased 55 times in the Cleveland Museum of Art’s annual May Show, beginning when he was just 18. His art has been exhibited at various prominent institutions, including the Canton Art Institute, the Butler Institute of American Art, and the Massillon Museum of Fine Arts.
