Amber Kempthorn explores memory and cultural mythology through drawing and collage. She is a graduate of Hiram College, the Maryland Institute College of Art, and the Cranbrook Academy of Art where she received her MFA in Sculpture in 2009. Recently her work was included in the inaugural Front International Cleveland Triennial for Contemporary Art and she was invited by the artist Jonathan Horowitz to make an artwork for his internet project The Daily Trumpet which, "addresses the erosion of democratic values and rise of intolerance taking hold in America and around the globe." In 2019 she received an Ohio Arts Council Individual Excellence Award and a Knight Arts Challenge Akron grant.
Kempthorn holds a Lecturer position in the Visual Arts Department at the Cleveland Institute of Art where in 2019 she and a colleague traveled with students to Marfa, Texas. She is also an adjunct faculty member at the College of Wooster, where she has taught drawing since 2012. She lives and works in Hiram, Ohio.
carta owns a large collection of artwork by Cleveland area artists, both for adults and children, and purchases about $25,000 of new art annually. We further our mission by donating annual scholarships to Cleveland Institute of Art students and provide educational activities to enhance awareness of area artists.
