Irving did her research and after speaking with Director, Gary Nash about the close relationship with the Hannahville Community and the local YMCA, she decided to weave in some symbols from the Potawatomi People. She also used the core values of the YMCA; caring, honesty, respect, responsibility and inclusion. These core values and symbols helped inform, connect, and present the basis for the work. Irving does most of her design work at the computer, printing off a “cartoon”, which is a pattern or template to guide the weaver at the loom. Multiple cones of yarn surround her as she weaves and decides on just the right colors to use.
