THE STORY BEHIND THE ART
It's 5 AM; early enough in the day to convince yourself that "AM" must stand for "Almost Mad". You crawl out of your warm bed and turn up the camping trailer's heat. There's just enough time to brew a thermos of coffee and collect the 30 pounds of camera gear before heading out into the pitch black night whose only light is from your truck's headlights battling to pierce the fog.
This hidden boondocking spot is a gem. Not for its beauty, but for the solitude it offers and the short drive required to access the Bandon, Oregon, USA, beach. 15 minutes later, you pull into the parking lot—the only soul around. One last review of the critical factors: time of moonset, tide level and direction, and weather forecast. It looks as good as one might hope, given Mother Nature's irascible nature.
Hop out of the truck. Swap shoes for boots. Hat? Check. Gloves? Check. Camera vest? Check. Camera and tripod? Check. Gear backpack? Check. Headlamp? Definitely. Time to go.
Fortunately, the darkness and the fog would make it impossible for anyone to see your comically overloaded frame making its way down the 100+ stairs from the parking lot at the top of the cliff to the beach. When you finally step off the staircase and onto the beach, you find yourself in an eerie world of sand and wet fog where even the largest objects only appear gradually as you approach.
But with every passing moment, the full moon is making her presence known. She's now bright enough to pierce the fog, throwing indistinct shadows across the sand. You turn off your headlight and use the silver glow to guide you down the beach. As the day slowly brings a hint of light to the sky, you find your position, set up your tripod, attach your camera, set the composition… and wait.
The minutes pass in silence. The moon seems to grow ever larger as it moves toward the horizon. Then—suddenly—the world forms a magical image in your viewfinder: a full moon bathing this mist-shrouded world in a pale, silver glow; its sphere aligning perfectly with the massive sea stacks sitting just offshore; and their odd shapes reflecting in the rippled waters that seem to stretch to infinity.
With the transcendental moment captured, you can celebrate with a hot coffee waiting for you in the truck… You only have to pack up your gear, hustle back down the beach, and climb that cliff staircase of innumerable steps before you can lay your hands on your prize.
