THE STORY BEHIND THE ART
The single word I use to describe how I captured this image is, “gift”. As in, a gift from the universe. If you follow me back in time to the morning before this image taken at sunset, you could share in the joyous freedom I felt as I landed at the Phoenix, AZ, airport and grabbed a taxi to the car dealership where took ownership of my roadster in Phoenix, AZ. I was giddy with the realization that a decades-long dream of owning this glorious sports car had become a reality. Putting the car’s top down, I drove north out into the desert, feeling the hot air stream by.

My destination for the next few days was the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. It was late afternoon by the time I arrived at Grand Canyon National Park, checked into to the local hotel, stored my luggage, grabbed my camera gear, and headed to the line for the park’s bus (which in summer is the only motorized traffic allowed to drive right up to the South Rim). I asked the driver which stop would he recommend for getting the best sunsets, and his reply was twofold: one spot was “The” iconic spot where everyone went; the other was his preferred one as it wasn’t so crowded.

I thanked him and hopped off at his recommended spot. With one eye on the lowering sun, I hiked down the short path from the parking area to the edge of the canyon, arriving in time to see the early evening sun strike the canyon walls face-on. Like many others, I’ve seen countless pictures of the Grand Canyon, but I can assure you, your first live view of it, when you’re standing mere inches away from sheer cliffs, is mind-bogglingly beautiful, massive, powerful, glorious, raw, and humbling.

With about 20 minutes until sundown, I set up my tripod, attached my camera, tweaked my polarizing filter to my telephoto lens, and started scanning through the viewfinder for shots. The ominous black clouds way off on the horizon seemed to be headed this way, so I zoomed my telephoto to the maximum and reframed the image to include a portion of that heavy sky.

Suddenly a lightning both flashed in the distance, followed by the deep, bone-shaking rumble of thunder. The storm continued to advance through my frame from right to left. And then, out of nowhere, came this intense rainbow stabbing down, right in my field of view.

What you see in this image is the culmination of that day—a gift combining canyon cliffs illuminated by the rich light of a sunset, dark storm clouds, and brilliant rainbow.

But more importantly to me, this experience was the spark that began my journey to becoming a professional landscape photographer—the most satisfying decision of my life.

PRODUCTION DETAILS
This photograph of a rainbow shining over the Grand Canyon during a thunderstorm at sunset in Grand Canyon National Park, AZ, USA, is available as a 16”x24" print (printed on archival giclée paper) which is mounted to a backing board, signed, and framed. Each framed print includes its accompanying narrative, which is etched into a 3.5”x5" black acrylic plaque.

Production of this print is limited to a total of 10 copies. Every edition is hand-signed with the appropriate edition number (e.g., "1 of 10") and is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity.
