THE STORY BEHIND THE ART
This is one of my rare landscapes where a human structure takes center stage. I had set out to photograph this abandoned marina on a cold autumn morning, planning to leverage the fog hanging on the water to evoke an eerie ambience.
But even though I live less than 15 minutes from this location, the fog was gone upon my arrival. Instead of a foreboding setting, puffy clouds overhead and morning light breaking through made for an almost cheery scene.
Almost.
For me, this composition works because it provides contradiction and contrast: bright lighting and puffy clouds should present a pleasant landscape, but that light also highlights the dilapidated state of the structure with its flaking paint and boarded-up windows.
I’ve nothing against warm, pretty pictures, but I believe that a moody scene captures one’s attention—and imagination—so much better. A good image must have tension. These are, after all, Landscape Stories, and who wants to read a story without conflict?
Look again at the image and you'll find more of these points: the water acts as a perfect mirror, reflecting the pier and building, yet in all that human structure with its symmetry and leading lines, there isn’t a single person. Here, I’m accentuating the void rather than the structure itself.
The resulting image transforms into a powerful symbol of loss and abandonment, where the marina—like us—must accept the inevitable decline that accompanies old age. In that situation, all we can do is reflect on memories of a much better past.
