16x24 Print Limited Edition of 10
THE STORY BEHIND THE ART
Capturing this particular image of sand dunes in the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area was a significant milestone, as I believe it was the finest example of my landscape work taken up to that point—and remains as one of my best works of all time.
What makes this image stand out? To me, it’s all about contrasting characteristics: it’s a natural landscape, yet the unearthly scene borders on the abstract. Smooth, rounded peaks are cut by the sharp horizon line and striated dune face. The strongly lit dunes are juxtaposed against a black sky.
It’s that set of contradictions that endows this still landscape with a palpable tension, one that brings me back to contemplate it time and again.
