THE STORY BEHIND THE ART
I’m mostly a landscape photographer, specializing in minimalist landscapes whose compositions can border on the abstract. Animals can be incorporated into an image, assuming that it helps provide perspective, anchors the foreground, or has a similar function to enhance the overall picture.
However, there are rare occasions when I stumble across an animal (or sometimes plant) that deserves the spotlight, such as this image of a beautiful tropicbird I took in Kauai, Hawaii.
What made this image so special was the angle of view: birds in flight are typically captured looking up at them from the ground, Yet because I was standing at the top of a cliff near the Kilauea lighthouse, I could view many of the seabirds flying around at eye level.
As I tracked this particular bird through my lens, it caught a strong wind coming up from the cliff, allowing it to hover in place. Incredibly, as I began shooting, the bird turned its head to regard me directly. For a frozen moment in time, I felt as if we both were curious about the other—two creatures from vastly different worlds that somehow met on a sunny day high up a cliff face.
