Artist Statement:
"Domino" is a sculptural embodiment of the precarious balance within global economies, inspired by the domino effect—a concept that reflects the interconnectedness and cascading impacts across various domains. This piece draws upon the phenomenon to explore the ripple effects of economic turmoil, as exemplified by significant events like the Evergrande real estate crisis in Asia and commercial real estate defaults in the US. These events underscore the interconnected nature of global economies and the potential for localized crises to have widespread effects.
Crafted from the contrasting materials of black stone and white marble, "Domino" stands at an imposing height of 8 feet on a 1-foot tall white base, symbolizing the overwhelming force with which economic downturns can impact individual lives and entire societies. The sculpture's stature is not just a physical attribute but also a metaphor for the potential consequences of the domino effect in the economy—just as the sculpture could crush a person if it toppled over, so too can the economic waves and turmoil crush individuals and communities.
The design features four dots on both its top and bottom surfaces, representing the potential for a single event to trigger a chain reaction akin to a line of dominoes toppling. This aspect is further enriched by a personal connection, with McNaughton incorporating a nod to his partner's birthday on the 4th, symbolizing how personal lives are intertwined with global economic narratives.
"Domino" serves as a metaphor for the social and economic impacts of the domino effect, embodying the tension between creation and destruction, stability and chaos. It invites viewers to reflect on the fragility of our interconnected world and the potential consequences of instability in one part of the global economy on the whole. Through its craftsmanship and the striking contrast between the materials, "Domino" highlights the stark reality of economic disparities and the cyclical nature of economic growth and decline.
