This piece was created on Sauvie Island, a painter's "go to" location for everything Oregon. Sauvie Island, originally Wapato Island or Wappatoo Island, is the largest island along the Columbia River, at 26,000 acres, and one of the largest river islands in the United States. Many of the local plein air artists can be seen painting here in the summer months when the bird migration is absent. It hosts several species of birds, and offers light fishing, a productive farming community, and a nude beach. I did sunbathe there once, but I was too chicken to remove my outer shell, albeit my inner shell is still very loud and present!
Anyway....I digress.
Back to the barn...
It sits in a field just off of Rentennaur Rd., a rather unknown place to visit, yet it has a field of corn, a little stream and a barn. If one is brave enough to go all the way to the end of Rentennaur Rd., cross over the dike and cattle guard and there you will find an an area the local artist's call "Africa". A very quiet and unknown place to paint.
