Don Saff is an artist, printmaker, educator and arts entrepreneur who has been a major force in the American prints and multiple movement since the 1960s. As art professor and chairman of the USF Art Department, Saff founded Graphicstudio / The Institute for Research in Art in 1968 on the campus of the university in Tampa. As an active and involved artist in New York, Saff made many friends and contacts, and he was able to draw upon these and the talent at the university to quickly establish Graphicstudio as one of the most important printmaking ateliers in the country. Brooklyn Museum of Art: Joint Venture: Donald Saff and the Art of Collaboration March 27, 2009—July 5, 2009 Joint Venture: Donald Saff and the Art of Collaboration investigates Saff’s role as a technical innovator who helped create the artwork of Nancy Graves, Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Rauschenberg, and James Rosenquist. This exhibition presents work created at Graphicstudio and Saff Tech Arts, as well as prints and sculptures from Saff’s personal collection. After working with artists at Graphicstudio, which is run under the auspices of the University of South Florida in Tampa, Saff founded Saff Tech Arts, a collaborative printmaking workshop in Oxford, Maryland, in 1990. The objects produced both at Graphicstudio and at Saff Tech Arts reflect not only the talent of each artist but also the creative influence of Donald Saff, who directed the works’ production. Saff’s ingenious talent is manifested in his nontraditional solutions, incorporating art and technology. As he once said, “If the artist can think it, we can make it.”
