Kevin grew up joyfully sailing on lakes in Oklahoma. In his 20s he inherited one of his grandfather’s boats but sold it when he moved to New Mexico because there were very few places to float it. Missing boating, he created this desert version. For Kevin it represents a lifeboat, a symbol of survival, adventure and faith, a vessel of refuge and support for braving times of change. The paper boat is among the oldest, most traditional origami designs. Lifted out of the water and high into the air, it became Light Boat, balanced on oars made from olive branches and a green leaf near the top of the rudder like a flag of life and hope for the future.
“To me Light Boat bears the marks of having been out at sea and is now longing for another kind of adventure,” Kevin says. “It is a symbol of faith in something greater than myself, to carry me and those I love as we move through challenges in time and history.”
