Cool Breeze on a Hot Day is an interactive painting designed to be participatory and evolving. The piece transforms as each viewer rearranges the hair. Beginning as mostly white, a rainbow of color emerges as the synthetic hair is brushed and styled. The experience of this piece will develop over the length its exhibition as the interactions of participating viewers accumulate.
The synthetic hair is silky soft and heavy in the hand, and it feels so realistic viewers are uncertain weather it is real even though the bright colors are clearly unnatural. Hair can be powerful reminder of our natural selves and conjures up ideas about our own vulnerability, sensuality, and biology. How we cultivate it defines our identity, in the same way, how we cultivate the world around us defines our environment. The second and larger work made in the series, the scale of the work is intended to be monumental enough to encompass the viewer in a landscape of interactive colors.
