Brush Me Gently is an interactive painting designed to be participatory and evolving. The piece transforms as each viewer rearranges the hair. Beginning as mostly smooth, the synthetic hair transforms as it is brushed and styled. The experience of the piece will develop over the length of the exhibition as the interactions of participating viewers accumulate.
Hair can be a powerful reminder of our natural selves and conjures up ideas about our own vulnerability, sensuality, and biology. The scale of the work is intended to be monumental enough to encompass the dimensions of the viewer. This piece was created in response to the compassion, empathy, and nurturing role of being a mentor. These sentiments are echoed in the title.
